Abstract

Monostyryl and distyryl-boradiazaindacene (BODIPY) derivatives to detect selectively Cu2+ ions among various metal ions in aqueous environments at biologically relevant pH 7.4 are designed, synthesized, and characterized. The highest fluorescence quenching is observed in the presence of Cu2+ ions. The association constants of the fluorophores are interpreted using the Stern-Volmer method. The results show that the designed monostyryl-BODIPY derivative can be used as a colorimetric sensor for copper ions in the presence of other selected ions.
