Abstract

A curriculum is the structure that determines which topics will be given to students, when they will be given and to what extent they will be offered in the preparation of teaching. The spiral approach is a content creation method that is frequently used in the preparation of curriculums. This study aims to reveal the position of the spiral approach in the current elementary school mathematics curriculum (Grades 1-8) according to its fundamental dynamics. With this purpose a descriptive analysis was carried out by using themes that depend on the dynamics of the spiral approach. As a result, it was shown that the elementary mathematics curriculum was sequencing developmentally. While the direct references to the spiral approach are included in the explanation section of the curriculum, it was indicated that its dynamics were used according to learning areas and objects. Moreover, it was found that there are differences in primary and middle school curriculum configurations depending on the diversity in learning areas. At the end of the study, suggestions were given about the improvable points of the current curriculum within the spiral approach.
