Özet

Purpose: The study was carried out with the aim of determining the farming attributes of young farmers and their tendencies of engagement in farming in Isparta province. Design/Methodology/Approach: The main material of the study was obtained by using a face to face survey with 110 young farmers between 18-40 years of age. Collected data were divided into two groups and analyzed: group 1, young farmers that livestock and crop production (40 farmers) and group 2, young farmers that only crop production (70 farmers). Chi-square test was used to analyze differences between groups depending on the normality of the data. Findings: The analyze results showed that statistically significant differences between these two groups with respect to the place of farmer's residence (village, district center and provincial center), farmer's family size and farm income. The main factors affecting young farmers' tendencies of engagement in farming were found to be: if I get a non-agricultural job offer, I give up farming, agriculture sector is still an important employment area for rural youths, agricultural supports for young farmers are important motivation source, the improvement of rural youths' socio-economic conditions increases the probability of young farmers staying in the village. It was also revealed that the statistically significant differences between these two groups with respect to these factors in terms of their tendencies of engagement in farming. Originality/Value: Farming attributes of young farmers and their tendencies of engagement in farming have been determined.
