This study was conducted to investigate the water application efficiencies and the abilities of the farmers to determine the irrigation time in the potato sowing areas on the Sandıklı Plain in Afyonkarahisar in 2012. For this purpose, 15 parcels ranging from 10 000 m² to 40 350 m² in area were selected to represent the potato sowing fields in the Koçhisar, Ülfeciler, Örenkaya, Kusura, and Ballık villages on the Sandıklı Plain. The research was carried out in the parcels irrigated through sprinkler irrigation. As a result of the research, water application efficiency ranged from 57.85% to 87.34% in the selected parcels, with the average found as 70.74%. The direct evaporation losses from the sprinklers varied between 0.85% and 1.55%. It was observed that the farmers generally decided on irrigation either by checking the soil by hand or by looking at the crop. Therefore, the soil moisture at which the farmers began to irrigate turned out to be lower than the soil moisture at which irrigation should have been started in 60% of the parcels under examination but higher in 40% of them. It was understood that no efficient irrigation schedule that considered the soil, crop, and climatic parameters was applied in the study area.
