This study was carried out in order to determine the effect of NaCl on runner plant production and tolerance level of some strawberry cultivars [the native cultivars of Arnavutköy, Yalova-15 (Y15), Yalova-104 (Y104), Yalova-416 (Y416) which are cross bred cultivars of "Arnavutköy x Aliso" and the foreign cultivars Douglas, Aliso and Dorit (216)]. The strawberry plants were grown in the bags filled with a substrate mixture [11.11% agro perlit, 66.66% peat of Yeniçaǧ and 22.22% sand] and were irrigated with water continuously at various levels of salt [control (1000), 2500, 5000, 7500, 10000 μmol l-1 NaCl] under glasshouse conditions. The effects of salt applications had an effect on vegetative growth (plant fresh weight, plant dry weight, stolon number, leaf area, plant length, primary root length and leaf number) and subjective salt tolerance (relative susceptibility, intermediate, resistant) varied from cultivar to cultivar. In generally, salinity decreased the plant fresh weight, plant dry weight, subjective salt tolerance, stolon number, leaf area, plant length, primary root length and leaf number depending on salt levels varying between 5000-10000 μmol l-1 NaCl. The 2500-5000 μmol l-1 NaCl concentrations did not effect leaf area. The mean leaf area was significantly reduced (6.40% at 7500 μmol l-1, 10.82% at 10000 μmol l -1 NaCl) at salt levels that were higher than 7500 μmol l -1 NaCl. Overall leaf symptoms according to subjective salt resistant score of stunted plants and dead leaves increased at higher NaCI concentrations (4.82 % at 2500 μmol l-1 - 34.46 % at 10000 μmol l -1 NaCI). The cross bred cultivars [Y15 (3.37%), Y104 (3.40%), Y416 (3.70%)] had higher salt tolerance than the foreign cultivars [Douglas (5.19%), Dorit (5.48%), Aliso (10.13%)] during vegetative growth. Especially, from this study it appears that "Y15, Y104 and Arnavutköy" strawberry plants grown are resistance. The salinity threshold values were low at <5000 μmol l-1. The relative resistance categories were separable between 5000 and 10000 μmol l-1 NaCl, where as no separation was obtained at within the control (1000) to 2500 μmol l-1 NaCl range. The thresholds of salinity at 2500 μmol l-1 NaCl were 2.13% (Arnavutköy) and 10.13% (Aliso).
